“I look like death warmed over,” I grumbled to myself as I looked in the mirror on my way out the door for work.

Not sleeping for a week did that to a person, but the nightmares were getting both stronger and weirder with each day. Adding to that, my body’s energy was being zapped because it was growing a human, and I was lucky to look as good as I did.

I’d never been as scared as I was on that exam table last week. Every little thing I’d done wrong before discovering my pregnancy flashed through my mind. A glass of wine at a business dinner. My lack of prenatal vitamins. Eating sushi. All of it came barreling at me, and I was sure I had killed my baby—our baby.

Go subconscious. Ugh.

I needed to figure out how to get some sleep and soon. I couldn’t begin to fathom how bad it would be if Corey hadn’t been there to calm me down. At least that, even in my dreams, was something to hold on to. He was going to be an amazing father.

I grabbed my coat and headed out for work. Had I been back at my old office in my old position, I’d have skipped the day and spent it watching television or reading a book with the hopes that sleep would take the wheel. But I still felt like I was walking on eggshells in the office, especially since quite a few people didn’t appreciate how much time I spent out in the field.

And trust me, it wasn’t because I wanted to be out all the time.

I took the back stairs to avoid the pleasantries of passing the front desk. Parts of staying here were great. I didn’t have to clean, I could grab breakfast on my way out if I was so inclined, and I only had to make a phone call to the front desk if a lightbulb went out or the faucet dripped.

Other parts of it, like a complete lack of privacy, were not so great.

At least work went by quickly.

It was a stay-at-my-desk kind of day, and between returning emails, making phone calls, and creating slides for an upcoming presentation, the day was over before I even realized I’d missed lunch.

Good thing I was going out for supper.

Ha. Who was I kidding? I had finally reached the point of hating to eat out and desperately wanted a nice, home-cooked meal in a real kitchen.

Where should I meet you? I sent a message off to Corey. We’d agreed to have dinner together so we could talk about the baby thing, but between his work schedule and mine, it took us almost a full week to find a large enough window of time to get together when we wouldn’t be rushed. We’d already sped through too many parts of the starting-a-family thing. This was one thing we wanted to slow down and enjoy.

By the time I reached the car, my phone was ringing. Who called anymore?

Apparently, Corey, from the name flashing on my phone.
